Description
This book is rich with illustrations to diagrammatically represent psychopharmacological concepts of dementia. Each page covers one concept and builds on previous pages. It is one of a series of 10 books by the author that offer more in-depth learning about different psychiatric topics. Clear instructions for receiving up to 8.0 CME credits are given at the beginning of the book.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide conceptual overviews of topics in dementia in an accessible and visual format. Readers are expected to be better able to identify neurobiological and molecular bases of common dementias, apply differential diagnostic assessments, know about currently available treatments, and explore the novel compounds and their research in the treatment of dementia. It is not intended to be a comprehensive reference and acknowledges that exceptions to rules are not covered.
Audience
This book would be useful to medical and pharmaceutical professionals at all stages of training who provide care to people who suffer from dementia.
Features
The book covers Alzheimer's dementia, synucleinopathies, tauopathies, and other dementias. It also specifically covers treatment of secondary behavioral symptoms. Designed for the visual learner, it has images on every page that describe each concept in a cartoon format. Beneath each figure is a short caption that describes the figure and the concept being pictorially represented. The images are beautiful and colorful. The authors successfully describe difficult concepts pictorially.
Assessment
This is an excellent book on the dementias that builds on the author's previous illustrated books. Its brevity enables readers to feel that the concepts can be mastered more quickly, but the book is more useful to those who are already familiar with many of the concepts. It is very useful for demonstrating complex psychopharmacological concepts that may be more difficult to explain exclusively with text.
