|
| The purpose of this relatively large, two-volume book is to provide a "quick reference" for pathologists as well as other medical professionals in the era of cancer genomics and personalized medicine. The book provides a concise summary of all the critical information needed to recognize, understand, and interpret anatomic pathology. |

| This edition adds new color photos, diagrams, tables, and major updates in knowledge. The book's 45 chapters are divided into two main parts -- general and organ system pathology. The first part, general pathology, covers fundamentals of anatomic pathology, including cytopathology, immunohistochemistry, tumors of unknown primary, electron microscopy, transplantation pathology, microbiology for the surgical pathologist, forensic pathology, autopsy pathology, biomedical informatics for anatomic pathology, quality assurance and regulations for anatomic pathology, molecular diagnostic pathology, molecular pathology of solid tumors, and human genetic disorders. Part II, organ systems, covers specific organ systems and various diseases encountered in each. Chapters have been revised to incorporate newly discovered diagnostic biomarkers, histological variants, new tumor classification systems, and new staging information. Several chapters have been completely rewritten. Each chapter is preceded by a detailed outline of contents for easy reference. Chapters are written in a bulleted format, covering clinical features, prognosis, macroscopic and microscopic features, and ancillary studies for different entities. The book is well illustrated with numerous gross and microscopic images and the quality of images is overall very good. In addition, a number of useful summary tables nicely complement the text. The end of each chapter has a list of pertinent references. |

Assessment
|
| This book remains very popular among pathology trainees, especially ones who are preparing for board examinations. Practicing pathologists also like to use it as a quick everyday reference. The world of pathology is changing quickly and this fourth edition has undergone a major revision with updates reflecting recent advances in cancer pathology and cancer genomics. As a consequence, the book now is two volumes and each volume is quite heavy. The overall organization and appearance of the book remain attractive with a large number of high quality images. I have no doubts that this will remain one of the favorite anatomic pathology books among residents, fellows, and staff. I highly recommend it. |
