Purpose
| In 2019, the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), a major surgical society, formed a committee called Diversity, Leadership, and Professional Development (DLPD) to help develop future leaders. This committee perceived the need for this book, and it was developed under the committee's aegis. Its purpose is to prepare surgeons for surgical leadership, including areas like practice and organizational development, reputation building, and cultural change within institutions. These are indeed worthy objectives. The book is needed, and it meets its lofty goals admirably. |

Features
| The book begins with a description of the SAGES University Masters Programs and demonstrates how this volume adds a new track to that program, a track in leadership and strategic development. The book consists of 49 chapters divided into 9 formal sections. Broadly speaking, there are three major sections - Leading Yourself, Leading Others, and Leading Systems. Each section has detailed information about a variety of topics, organized into compact chapters. There are a few highly selected diagrams or charts. Several forewards introduce the book, and "Foreward 2: Leadership Tips for Surgeons" by Daniel Jones (a list of 14 concise tips) should be handed out to all aspiring young surgeons. |
