Description
This book provides medical information to aid health care providers and athletic trainers recognize medical conditions and decide on a course of treatment. The previous edition was published in 2017. |
Purpose
The purpose of the book is to teach athletic trainers to identify the signs and symptoms of a medical diagnosis, understand potential treatments athletes may receive, and understand specific return to play metrics for common medical conditions. The book emphasizes that athletic trainers are often the first health care providers athletes see and can detect many conditions first and refer properly to physicians if given the correct education. Given the amount of day-to-day interaction athletic trainers have with a group of athletes, the book is filling a key role by providing an overview of a variety of common conditions. |
Audience
This book's primary audience is students and young professionals, specific to athletic training, but it would also be appropriate for other allied health students. The book reads like a textbook and would be more appropriate for a student. A professional might find it useful as a reference book. The subject matter is appropriate for both athletic training and other medical professionals. Both authors are experts in the athletic training and education fields. They have numerous years of experience on the field as trainers, as well as teaching, heading professional societies, and writing other medical textbooks. |

Features
This book reviews common non-musculoskeletal conditions in the active population. It puts special emphasis on sports-specific metrics, such as return to play criteria, for each condition. The book's organization is a main highlight, as it sets up students for success when learning new information. The book contains three main sections: an introductory medicine section, a section on pharmacology and procedures, and a section that breaks down common conditions by organ system. Each chapter begins with clearly stated objectives, which is especially helpful for young learners. Another common theme is the regular text box inserts with headings of "Clinical Tips", "Red Flags", or "Condition Highlight", which bring special emphasis to a topic of interest. The book contains color photos and diagrams throughout to aid in understanding of both normal and pathologic conditions. The pharmacology and procedure chapters have excellent tables and step by step procedure instructions, are good instructional aids as well as references for the future. The book also comes with access to online case studies to assess for retention and utilization of newly learned material. |

Assessment
Overall, this book is a high-quality book containing an excellent system for learners to organize their thoughts surrounding new topics. It will be especially useful for athletic training students and newly graduated athletic trainers. There are some sections that go into more detail than would be required for athletic trainers (specifically the procedures and pharmacology sections), although this may be an attempt to widen the book's intended audience. This may also allow the book to function as a reference guide in some capacities, although it does not appear this was the author's original intention. The updates included in this edition include photos of dermatologic conditions on a variety of skin tones as well as new chapters on endocrine disorders, systemic disorders, and prevention of disease transmission, making this edition a needed update. |
