Description
This book identifies the symptoms and causes of pharmacist burnout and suggests introspection, S.M.A.R.T. goal setting, and professional development as pathways to alleviating burnout. The book includes industry-specific examples and resources, which will make it very easy for a pharmacist or technician to put into practice. Furthermore, the personal anecdotes from the authors encourage and inspire readers to examine their professional lives and make changes to increase career satisfaction. |
Purpose
This book has the dual purpose of preventing or alleviating pharmacy career burnout depending on the audience. It is useful to both students looking to structure their careers and veteran pharmacists who are struggling to remain motivated and inspired. The book is timely given the high rate of healthcare worker burnout exacerbated by the pandemic. It gives readers many suggestions to address the issue of burnout. |
Audience
The intended audience for is book is pharmacy industry personnel, from technicians and students to veteran pharmacists. While the book is probably most useful to pharmacists and pharmacy students, the book uses simple language and engaging anecdotes, allowing it to reach this broad audience. The author and contributors' experience in training and education of pharmacists and technicians allows them to successfully communicate their ideas in a useful way. |
Features
The book covers career development as a method of preventing burnout through increased involvement in professional organizations, goal setting, and personal branding. This approach is useful because it focuses on what the readers can control. It could be improved by using less space defining the issue of burnout and applying that time instead to strategies for dealing with difficult work situations, i.e., conflict management, equity and diversity issues, work-life balance, and money management, which often contribute to career dissatisfaction in our profession. |
Assessment
The pharmacist-specific approach to the topic of burnout and professional development was lacking, so this book will be very useful to many in the profession. A future edition could benefit from the addition of strategies for dealing with real-world work situations, i.e., conflict management, equity and diversity issues, work-life balance, and time management, which often contribute to burnout. |
