| The 20th edition improves on an already respectable textbook. Collectively, the chapters are comprehensive guides to not only nonprescription drugs, but also nonpharmacologic self-care and patient counseling. |

Purpose
|
| Written and edited by a plethora of experts in respective fields, this is one of the few authoritative references on the subject in a very wide field. Nonprescription drugs and lifestyle changes are usually the primary treatment option for most patients. Knowing what advice to give greatly improves pharmacist contributions and credibility while improving patient health. Furthermore, the over-the-counter (OTC) status of drugs and devices is constantly changing, which makes any updated reference welcome. |

| The book includes all the necessary information for learning about self-care, recommending lifestyle adjustments, and complementary and integrative medicine. The textbook style is thorough and includes summaries, but those looking for a simple lookup or quick facts and figures may prefer the Quick Reference Guide. Otherwise, this handbook is appropriate for pharmacy students, practicing pharmacists, or other medical professionals who dispense advice for self-care. |

| The chapters are well organized to cover just about any condition that can be self-treated. Additionally, the book includes an entire non-therapeutic section regarding the medical practitioner's role in providing advice, the legal and regulatory issues regarding such, and the best approaches to providing advice to patients. There is a good balance between providing background information (pathophysiology, pharmacology, prescription medication, etc.) and therapeutic information without ever losing focus on patient self-care and nonprescription drugs. New to this edition are several case scenarios in each chapter to provide a more real-life, practical approach to self-care. Fans of DiPiro's Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach, 11th Edition (McGraw Hill, 2020) will appreciate this update. The charts, tables, and graphics all help to organize concepts and allow for easy comparison of alternatives. However, the color plates seem anachronistic the way they are set off from chapters even if they are important. |

| It is hard to compare this handbook to other references on the subject because there are so few in the same class. Many similar-named references are simply a list of drug monographs or folk remedies. This handbook is the sole authority for good reason. For medical practitioners providing advice regarding patient self-care (especially pharmacists), this book should be at the top of their reading lists. |
