|
| This book's purpose remains as Dr. Ioachim intended when the first edition was published in 1982: to serve as an inclusive, practical, and useful reference book of lymph node pathologies. |

| The book is geared toward all practicing pathologists who evaluate lymph node biopsies and excisions, be they hematopathology subspecialty-trained or not. |

Features
|
| Broken down into 10 parts, the book begins with a discussion of normal lymph nodes (part 1) and the various diagnostic methods (part 2). In particular, the methods on flow cytometry and molecular assessment have grown since the last edition. Parts 3 and 4 are dedicated to infectious and benign lymph node entities. Part 5, the largest of the book and the one that has grown the most, covers lymphomas as described in the revised fourth edition of the WHO classification of hematopoietic/lymphoid tissues. Part 6 is new to this edition, discussing lymphoproliferative disorders arising in immunodeficiency. Parts 7 to 9 cover dendritic cell/histiocytic, spindle cell, and vascular neoplasms of lymph nodes. Finally, part 10 addresses essential-to-recognize tumors that frequently metastasize to the lymph nodes. Within each part there are chapters, each dedicated to a single entity. The chapters are like easy-to-read, encyclopedia-like entries due to key subsections: etiology/pathogenesis, clinical features, treatment/prognosis, histology/cytology, immunophenotyping, other diagnostic tests (electron microscopy, laboratory tests, cytogenetics, molecular, etc.) and differential diagnoses. Each chapter ends with a checklist that summarizes key clinical and pathologic details one must look for when diagnosing that chapter's entity. In part 5, each chapter also includes a section that lists the crucial immunophenotypic findings for that chapter's lymphoma. Finally, references for further reading are included at the end of each chapter. There are over 700 photographs, illustrations (e.g., flow plots), and micrographs in this textbook. While these images are mostly on the small side, each image has excellent contrast, color, and sharpness, and is accompanied by a clear caption. Tables are effectively utilized, as in the chapter on flow cytometry where there is a very practical multi-page table on immunophenotyping markers. |

Assessment
|
| This book has grown by about 260 pages since the fourth edition to maintain its standing as a comprehensive text. Yet, it remains an exceptionally well-organized, highly relevant, and immensely useful resource for practicing pathologists. This book would also serve as an excellent learning tool for pathology residents and hematopathology fellows. |
