Description
This book is a preparatory and supplemental guide for the psychiatry rotation, shelf exam, and Step 2 and 3 exams. It is the sixth edition, last published in 2019. The book includes tips and advice for a clinical clerkship as well as material tested on exams. Its content is clearly laid out and well organized to be used as a quick reference for high-yield topics. The authors include adequate information on the larger topics without overemphasizing less tested or relevant topics.

Purpose
The purpose of this book is to guide medical students in preparation for the psychiatry shelf exam and to accompany the psychiatry content on the Step 2 and 3 exams. The authors also claim it serves as a guide to the clinical clerkship, including diagnosis and treatment in the clinical setting. These are worthwhile objectives because of the need for a variety of primary and secondary study resources for students. This book reaches its stated objectives as it gives a broad look at the testable psychiatry material while also including examples of common patient presentations students will encounter in the hospital or clinic.

Audience
According to the authors, this book is designed for medical students and those preparing for Step 3. It is also recommended for those requiring an adjunct to their clinical clerkship and test preparation, which may not be sufficient for their understanding or mastery of the content. The book is a manageable length that can be read from start to finish or used as a reference. It meets the needs of its audience by providing a comprehensive and digestible resource for medical students. The authors are credible as they are all physicians and have experience in psychiatry or a related field covered in this book.

Though the book is useful for more than just clinical rotations and shelf exams, the first two chapters include tips for performing well on the shelf, high-yield cheat sheets students may print out and bring to their rotation, and the components of the psychiatric evaluation. The chapters that follow cover different psychiatric disorders and vary in length based on the subject. The margins of the book include tips for the wards highlighted in green, exemplary clinical scenarios in blue, and facts helpful for exams in orange. The clinical scenarios and explanations are particularly helpful as they mirror exam questions and display how the answers depend on key details in the vignette. There are also tables, several mnemonics, and space for hand-written notes throughout the book. The book includes relevant information on each disorder such as diagnosis, DSM-5 criteria, epidemiology, etiology, differentials, course, prognosis, and treatment.

Assessment
This book is an excellent addition to a psychiatry clinical rotation and for shelf preparation. The chapter organization and subject headings allow for quick reference to specific topics in which further explanation is needed. It is not an overwhelming read and is clinically focused. Psychopharmacology, which often has less overlap in other clinical rotations and subject examinations, is covered simply and thoroughly. Students may choose to use this book as their sole resource or as a review of the high-yield topics in psychiatry. The condensed nature of this book allows for the use of other learning methods while on a busy rotation. This updated version of the book includes a chapter on the approach to psychiatric patients in the emergency department.
