Purpose

| The purpose of the book is to illuminate understanding of the medicinal qualities and efficacy of antimalarial plants from a global perspective. Given the global reach of malaria, and the myriad approaches to management from health care providers and traditional medicine practitioners, this is a worthy objective. The book meets the objective by enabling practitioners to learn from each other by creating a 'one stop shop'. The book offers a place where practitioners in India can easily see what the healing agent is in a compound and determine its capacity and compare with ingredients used by practitioners in Ghana, the U.S., Tanzania, or anywhere else in the world where malaria is prevalent. |

| This book covers malaria treatment using plant species. It takes a global view of the myriads of medicinal plants used to treat malaria. It discusses the active ingredient in the plants, the part of the plants that is useful for malaria treatment, and highlights research that supports the efficacy of the specific compound in the plants that facilitates malaria treatment. The book provides a summary of additional uses of the active antimalarial ingredients for treating non-malarial disorders. The tables are particularly helpful as they provide an orderly summary for a topic that could prove chaotic given the myriads of plants used worldwide and the fact that the part of the plant used in treatment varies. Appearing to acknowledge the need for clarity, the book includes specifics on the part of the plant used in treatment. Further, it includes toxic compounds that are associated with these antimalarial plants and discusses co-management strategies through the lens of nutraceutical supplementation. Included in the text is a section on anti-malarial drugs and drugs with compounds derived from plants. The strengths of the book include the summary tables, the references, other known actions, and applications of the active ingredient in the plant and adverse implications or plant toxicities. The chapter on sustainable harvesting is a value add. The pictures would be more useful if done in color; as is, the distinguishing features of the plants are hard to see. |

| This book is a good resource primarily for practitioners of herbal medicine, but also for any practitioners interested in treating malaria. This book is similar in format to Traditional Medicinal Plants and Malaria, Willcox et al. (CRC Press, 2004). |
