The book also provides the introductory information necessary for the first few months of residency as well as the first day of various rotations. The previous edition was published in 2017. |

| The purpose of the book is to prepare new students or new residents for the first time walking into the operating room. In a comprehensive fashion, the book addresses all questions new learners will have when starting an anesthesiology rotation or an anesthesiology residency. Reading this book will easily relieve many of the anxieties of the first few weeks. The book accomplishes this goal exceptionally in an easy-to-read fashion that is understandable by novices. |

| This book is intended for new learners beginning an anesthesiology rotation or an anesthesiology residency. These readers will clearly appreciate the book's approach and will notice their anxiety levels decrease from the knowledge gained. Advanced learners will not have the same response, determining that the material is too basic. The book does provide introductions to some advanced rotations such as obstetric anesthesiology, PACU, and non-operating room anesthesiology so more senior residents will refer to this book a few more times throughout their residency. It is impressive that these experienced authors have a solid understanding of being a novice and addressing their concerns. The original authors are no longer contributing; however, the current authors are maintaining the goal of the book and improving its contents. |

| The focus of the book is the information needed by novices to anesthesiology. The book begins with an approach to tracheal intubation as this procedure is the hallmark of anesthesiology. The book then discusses vascular access, followed by monitors. Interestingly, the book then addresses crises and complications in anesthesiology. These topics are too early, focusing initially on rare complications concluding with more common intraoperative problems. It would make more sense to start with common problems. Following the chapters on complications, the book discusses preoperative evaluation, which should occur earlier in the book. Various surgical procedures are then discussed. The book includes a chapter titled "Be the Best", a true highlight to the book with advice that will serve the learner throughout their career. This chapter focuses on wellness of the new learners and how to maintain this wellness through a challenging career. This chapter also includes a discussion of environmental concerns to the administration of anesthesia, an extremely important topic that most books do not address. The book is outstanding and an inclusion of more types of surgery would extend its use throughout an entire residency. |

| This book is the sixth edition and provides a useful textbook for introductory learners. It is unique in that no other books have this much information in a clear and understandable fashion. The inclusion of wellness and environmental concerns updates the book and makes the learner think of these critical issues early in the career. This book is extremely highly recommended for new learners in anesthesiology, both residents and medical students. |
