Description
| This book covers a broad range of topics relevant to kidney transplantation in a single, hardcover volume that includes 43 chapters and is just over 800 pages. The prior edition was published in 2019. In addition to updated content throughout the book, it includes new chapters covering the Covid-19 pandemic and xenotransplantation. |
Purpose
| Since the first edition, this series has intended to serve as a comprehensive guide to the field of kidney transplantation. This book continues to fulfill that goal, with comprehensive discussions of all the basic aspects of transplant medicine. This is the first edition released since the death of longtime editor Dr. Peter Morris, who edited the initial text at the very dawn of organ transplantation. |

Audience
| This book offers a general overview of a broad range of topics and will be useful to anyone caring for transplant patients, especially those without dedicated training in the field such as students, hospitalists, primary care providers, or general nephrologists and surgeons. The broad nature of the topics covered means sacrificing some in-depth discussions, making this more suited for general practitioners than transplant nephrologists or surgeons. |

Features
| The chapters included here are uniformly well-written and include an abundance of useful references and illustrations. Particularly impressive are general discussions of immunology and extensive overviews of immunosuppressive medications, with entire chapters devoted to each major class as well as some less frequently encountered medications. Overall, the flow of chapters within the textbook is logical, and there are no obvious topics overlooked. A few chapters do feel out of place, including those devoted to an overview of renal replacement therapies and dialysis access. These take space from other areas that receive relatively little discussion including long-term management considerations or surgical techniques and complications. |

Assessment
| Overall, this book is an excellent, essential resource. It covers the full breadth of transplant medicine, from basic science and immunology to practical management considerations, as well as initial patient evaluations to long-term care of transplant patients. By necessity, the breadth of topics covered means that many areas must be at least somewhat abbreviated. And while the field of transplantation is rapidly changing, it is worth noting that the benefits of the updated edition lie in the existing chapters themselves, rather than the new added content (Covid-19 and the still highly experimental area of xenotransplantation). However, as a general overview of the field, this book is an unmatched title. |
