Description
| This reference book includes health information for international travel and provides guidance for the practice of travel medicine. It compiles U.S. government travel medicine recommendations for immunizations, prophylaxis, and treatment of common travel-related illnesses. This 2026 edition updates the previous 2024 edition. |
Purpose
| This book's purpose is to provide healthcare providers with informed travel medicine recommendations. This book has worthy objectives and is highly needed. The book successfully achieves its aim with clear indexing, brief summaries of relevant information, color figures, and maps for reference. |
Audience
| The book is written for healthcare providers performing travel medicine consultations as part of a pre-travel medical team. This is relevant for a range of specialties such as nursing, internal medicine, general medicine, infectious disease, and travel medicine. This book meets the needs of its intended audience. The authors are highly credible authorities on the subject, being well recognized, credentialed, and published experts in the field. |
Features
| This book comprises 11 sections that address assessment of traveler host risks, management of common travel-related hazards and infections, navigation of health risks related to particular types of travel, post-travel evaluations, and tips for travel consultation to specific locations. The subject areas are well-organized for rapid reference, and the writing is clear and complete. There are multiple color figures and maps that facilitate reader engagement and can be used to educate patients in the office. The brief yet complete discussion of pertinent issues for specific travel-related concerns and the figures are the best features of this book. The main shortcoming is that the vaccine data lack current updates due to the rapidly changing vaccine landscape. There is, however, a website for updates to the book listed in the preface. |

Assessment
| This book is of exceptional quality and is considered the industry gold standard for books on travel medicine advice. Other books in the field include similar information such as Travel Medicine, 4th Edition, Keystone et al. (Elsevier, 2019). This updated edition is justified as vaccine information changes rapidly and will likely change again for the next edition. I recommend this book to physicians who perform pre-travel consultations with the caveat that checking the CDC's website for up to date outbreak and vaccine recommendations is necessary. |
