Purpose
|
| This book is intended to introduce emergency health and management from the lens of public health. Linking disaster-related events, emergency medicine, and public health approaches, the book questions the current reactionary and curative approach to emergency health and introduces precautionary and preventative interventions. As climate crises become more relevant and the scope of medical emergencies from natural disasters increases, this book is both needed and worthy. The print version is complete with comprehensive figures, tables, and learning activities to enhance reader understanding. |

| The book is intended for students and professionals new to the field of emergency health, with multiple learning objectives and topics for discussion explicitly outlined in each chapter. An easy-to-follow glossary at the end of the book and an abundance of figures throughout the chapter meets the educational needs of readers interested in the basic principles of emergency medicine in the context of public health. The author is a recognized expert and credible authority, trained as a medical doctor in emergency and disaster medicine with experience as a medical school professor and chief executive officer of a public health emergencies firm. |

| The chapters are organized into seven distinct parts, preceded by a forward, preface, introduction, and table of contents. Chapters are broken into comprehensive sections with figures and learning objectives that provide a valuable framework for readers new to emergency health. The book begins by defining disaster-related disease, followed by the etiology and epidemiology of disaster-related disease, and ends with the principles, practice, and opportunities for emergency health. Following the concluding section are two appendices, including a glossary of key terms, and a comprehensive index. The book uses comprehensive figures and clear text to introduce concepts of health promotion, risk reduction, disease prevention, and well-founded decision-making principles, focusing on the population at risk and those at the receiving end of a hazardous event. Principle themes and terms are outlined in each chapter with bolded glossary items, bulleted learning objectives, and suggested topics for discussion. Digital chapters are available at the APHA online bookstore with a link located at the front of the book. Unfortunately, there are no instructions included with the link and locating the chapters on the APHA website is not intuitive. Clear instructions on obtaining digital chapters would enhance the pedagogical value of the book. |

Assessment

| The book is a quality educational tool, useful for students and a worthwhile teaching aid for professionals. Other books in the field of emergency health provide insight into public health policies and disaster management; however, this book is preferred for readers new to the field who require a more thorough introduction to disaster definitions and emergency health principles. |
