Description
This is the 10th edition of the leading textbook of pathology for medical students and residents. It covers in great detail salient features of general pathology and the most important topics of systemic pathology. Almost all chapters have been significantly updated, and some have been reworked in a major way. The printed version of the textbook is accompanied by an online version, which also contains supplemental teaching material. The previous edition was printed in 2015. |
Purpose
This book was conceived many years ago by Dr. Stanley Robbins, who published it in 1957 as a comprehensive single-author medical school text. Generations of American medical students, as well as students in many other countries, have learned from it the basics of pathology. More importantly, they have been shown that pathology is the basis of medicine. Reading this attention-grabbing and well-structured textbook of pathology, most of the readers realized then as well one generation after another that a solid knowledge of pathology is a good preparation for clinical studies. Finally, they were also shown that pathology is both a basic science and a clinical discipline. Reading the textbook, they learned how to correlate pathology data with clinical presentations of various diseases. "Robbins" became the synonym for a modern textbook of pathology, which it has remained even now in the 21st century. Its online version and electronic supplements for the 10th edition are a guarantee that the book will remain well positioned on the highly competitive textbook market. |

Audience
The original book was written for medical students. Medical students still remain the present edition's main target. I heard from my former students that it is the book that most of them retain on their shelves many years after graduation. Over time it became popular with teachers in other health related disciplines such as dentistry, pharmacy, or veterinary sciences. It is the recommended text in most pathology assistant programs. Pathology residents have it as their basic text - the street wisdom (transmitted from one generation to another) being that it contains all you need to pass the anatomic part of the Pathology Specialty Board Examination. Since most candidates pass the boards, the rumors might be right! The fact that the book has been written by 27 leading U.S. pathologist contributors guided by four acclaimed and experienced authors is yet another recommendation. It is the highest ranked major textbook of pathology books listed on Amazon! |

Features
The book is divided into 29 chapters covering both general and systemic pathology. The organization of the book follows the standard format of previous editions, which only shows that the original author and his successors have discovered many years ago the winning formula. The text is well written and readable, even though it contains a myriad of highly technical data. Anatomic pathology data are, whenever possible, explained in terms of pathogenesis and pathophysiology, often supplemented by current molecular biology discoveries. The morphologic data are highlighted in green-colored paragraphs, to make them stand out from the rest of the text. Key concepts are presented at the end of each major section as bulleted text included in blue stained boxes for quick review. Clinical-pathologic correlations, the backbone of the original Robbins' text, remain the most attractive aspects of this edition. The text is supplemented by well-chosen macroscopic and microscopic color photographs of original pathologic specimens. Conceptual multicolor illustrations provided by James Perkins, Distinguished Professor of Medical Illustration, Rochester Institute of Technology, are yet another attractive feature. These illustrations will help the novice easily understand the text and be used by teachers in PowerPoints to illustrate their lectures. As in previous editions, at the end of each chapter there are well-chosen, current references. Each reference is annotated to indicate why it was chosen. A detailed index is found at the end of the book. The electronic version of the book, supplemented by questions and answers and clinicopathologic material for interactive learning or for seminars, will appeal to many students more comfortable with online material then printed books. |

Assessment
A few years ago, I reviewed the eighth edition of this textbook in most laudatory words. I could not resist and decided to begin this section by quoting the first sentence of that 2010 review verbatim since it applies to the present text as well: "This is a masterfully written and edited new edition of the leading American pathology textbook, well known and widely read throughout the world." The current book is a bit shorter, and, mirabile dictu, even less expensive! It contains more conceptual drawing and much more molecular biology. The leading features of previous editions are retained and imperceptibly expanded by the "new stuff" that my generation never even dreamt of (I graduated in 1964!). The clinical-pathologic correlations remain the pillars and the backbone of the book, but they also reflect the changes in the practice of diagnostics and clinical medicine in general. The outcomes of many diseases have considerably improved, and organ transplantation has become a well-accepted treatment modality in which pathologists have a prominent role. Understanding of molecular biology is not any more for academics only - it has a role in understanding the pathogenesis of many diseases, diagnostics, and especially therapy. The sooner medical students realize this, the better off they will be. Reading this book will help them in this respect. For current students and residents alike, this textbook will be an excellent introductory text to modern clinical medicine. Like their predecessors, students will keep their copy of Robbins on their shelves for life and revisit it from to time. I recommend it highly. Simply stated, I cannot imagine a major modern textbook of pathology could be written better than this. |
