Description
This is the most recent update of a manual for the staging of adult cancers from the American Joint Committee on Cancer. This edition incorporates advances in cancer care since the previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose
The purpose is to use new information as it has become available on the biology of cancer to provide a uniform language for researchers and clinicians. In order to move from a population-based approach to a personalized approach to treatment, this edition adds new features incorporating prognostic factors. In recognition of this transformation, the term "Prognostic Stage Groups" is used instead of "Anatomic Stage and Prognostic Groups."
Audience
This is a valuable reference for students, physicians, scientists, and cancer registrars. With clear descriptions and definitions of terminology, it can be used by experienced practitioners as well as those new to cancer staging.
Features
After an introduction to cancer staging, the first chapter covers the principles of staging and the language of the TNM system that is used throughout the book. Other initial chapters present valuable information, such as what is new for this edition, metrics of cancer survival, and prognostic models. These initial chapters provide a strong basis for understanding the rest of the book and the use of the staging system. As in previous editions, it covers adult malignancies based on anatomic region. Chapters are organized in a consistent format, starting with a summary of changes from the previous edition. Prognostic values are also now included in the staging system. For example, in breast cancer staging, estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, and HER-2 receptor status are included in the prognostic stage. Electronic resources are also cited, including other organizational guidelines as well as the online site for the AJCC staging forms.
Assessment
Overall, this edition is a welcome update, incorporating new advances in cancer knowledge to more accurately reflect modern cancer care. Importantly, it has taken our knowledge of prognostic factors other than anatomy and blended them into the well-known TNM staging system. It will be a valuable tool for students, researchers, and clinicians as they care for cancer patients.
