Description
| This book maintains its reputation as a helpful, concise reference for diagnosing and treating common and complicated internal medicine diseases. The manual is organized and divided into organ systems and clinical disciplines, using an evidence-based therapeutic strategies approach to describe diagnostic and treatment protocols in an easy-to-read manner with clear outlines that include bullet-point lists, treatment algorithms, charts, and dosage charts. The updated 38th edition incorporates the newest clinical guidelines, as well as newly approved drugs, new standards of care, and technologies associated with enhanced patient care to provide current resources for practicing physicians. |

Purpose
| This book intends to give clinicians a quick, simple, portable, reliable, and current reference for making clinical decisions each day. This is an important and much-needed goal due to the need for rapid access to practical information in fast-paced inpatient and outpatient care. It has accomplished their objective by providing clear, direct, and content-based recommendations based on the current literature, avoiding long-winded discussions about theory that distract from the purpose of this publication. |
Audience
| The audience for this book includes residents in internal medicine, hospitalists, general internists, and advanced practice providers needing a reliable and effective resource for their therapeutic decisions. This book is also an excellent reference for senior medical students who are currently doing clinical rotations or preparing for board examinations. |

Features
| The manual provides considerable details on cardiology, pulmonology, infectious disease, nephrology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, hematology-oncology, and other subspecialties of internal medicine. Instead of providing an in-depth review of pathophysiology, the manual focuses on diagnosis and stepwise management recommendations for each disease. The cardiovascular and infectious disease sections are well represented and provide clear summaries of guideline directed therapies. The standardization of formatting creates greater ease of use: tables summarize first-line and alternative therapies, algorithms assist with clinical reasoning, and clear delineation of medication dosages. The cited references are proportionate and current, providing evidence-based support for each recommendation. There are few illustrations; however, this runs parallel to the desire of the manual to focus on therapeutic decision-making rather than visual learning. One limitation that highly specialized topics may be only briefly covered and thus are insufficient to replace full length subspeciality textbooks. This is reasonable given the manual's scope and purpose as a practical handbook. |

Assessment
| This book provides an excellent, valuable contribution to the area of internal medicine. When compared to much larger references like Harrison's Principles of Internal Medicine, 21st Edition, Loscalzo et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2023) the reviewed book is much simpler and more clinically based, which makes it a much better reference for patient care at the point of care, as it is a smaller and easier to carry resource providing increased usability and usefulness than larger reference materials. As a later edition, the updates provide enough justification for replacement of previously published editions due to changes in treatment protocols, new options for medication therapy, and other recent developments in internal medicine. Therefore, this book continues to be an essential and practical reference for both residents and working clinicians looking for clear, concise assistance in the care of their patients. |
