Description
This book serves as a comprehensive reference source and synopsis of several pertinent topics within clinical psychiatry and treatment of psychiatric disorders. An accompanying ebook has all of the same text materials. This is the 12th edition. The 11th edition was published in 2014.
Purpose
According to the authors, the purpose of the textbook is to provide a "brief and more condensed statement on the field of psychiatry," aimed specifically at trainees. These are worthy objectives and previous editions of this text have long been a cornerstone of behavioral health education.
Audience
According to the book, the intended audience is trainees, such as medical students and psychiatric residents. The authors do acknowledge, however, that the text may be useful for practicing behavioral health providers as well. The authors are recognized experts in the field of psychiatry based on their credentials and previous work.
Features
The text covers in sufficient detail a wide breadth of pertinent topics in clinical psychiatry, treatment of psychiatric disorders, and specific issues such as ethics in psychiatry and neurodevelopment. Although the number of topics covered is numerous, each topic is covered concisely over a few pages. The book utilizes images and tables when necessary, but the authors note there is much less artwork in this text than in previous editions. Aside from this, however, the text is structured quite similarly to the 11th edition.
Assessment
This book serves as a worthy update to the previous edition written in 2014. The authors made the choice to simplify the amount of detail and artwork in this edition compared to previous editions, but the degree of high-yield information is maintained throughout. Those familiar with previous editions of the text will be able to easily navigate and familiarize themselves with this new edition. This title has long been regarded as one of the best psychiatric reference texts, and there has been no sacrifice in text quality. The title may suffer from a lack of unique options in its online version, but this is a fairly minor criticism.
