Multiple sections of each diagnostic label contain a main heading and related bullet points. This is the 11th edition of this nursing diagnosis resource with a copyright date of 2020. Purpose This paperback reference manual was created to guide in the development of nursing care plans that ensure a comprehensive and individualized approach to the nursing care of patients using the most up-to-date NANDA approved nursing diagnoses. This reference manual will facilitate in developing a variety of care plan types, for any patient, across all care settings. Audience This book is a valuable resource for nursing students, educators, and nursing professionals of varying specialty backgrounds. The development of patient centered nursing care is facilitated by use of all phases of the nursing process. The information provided for each diagnostic label and its related care plan is thorough, focused, and concise. Evidence-based references allow for further exploration of any aspect of each diagnosis by the reader. The author is a DNP and lecturer at UCLA School of Nursing as well as an author of numerous books, which makes her a credible authority on nursing care plan development. Features Following the preface, a thorough overview of the nursing process is provided. The entire manual consists of alphabetically organized diagnostic labels that are defined and include related factors, associated conditions, assessment criteria, defining characteristics, and expected outcomes. Nursing interventions and their associated rationales are presented as well. Evaluations for expected outcomes and documentation priorities are included for each listed diagnostic label. The title of the book is appropriate as it is a comprehensive reference manual. The formatting of this book makes it easy to read and is organized in a manner that facilitates reader understanding as well as proper use of this resource. QSEN competency icons are listed for each diagnostic label to highlight important nursing care and safety considerations. Multiple appendixes facilitate the selection of appropriate nursing diagnoses by either a listed medical diagnosis or by a population focus. Templates are also provided to aid in organizing patient assessment data. Assessment This 11th edition is an essential tool for students, expert clinicians, and educators. It is well formatted, detailed, and up to date in terms of NANDA-I standards and QSEN competencies. Inclusion of Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) and Nursing Outcomes Classification (NOC) add to this reference manual's comprehensive approach to nursing diagnosis using the nursing process as its framework. I recently used Nursing Care Plans: Guidelines for Individualizing Patient Care Across the Life Span, 9th edition, Doenges et al. (F. A. Davis Company Publishers, 2014) for care plan development, but after seeing this book, I prefer it not only for the information provided but for its formatting, ease of its understanding, and use. The additional current references provided are also helpful to take a deeper dive into some aspects of each diagnostic label. Although I did not see the previous edition, I noted the improvements made on the back cover of the book. These updates seem to justify a new edition.
