Description
The Washington Manual was one of the first, and it continues to be one of the best, pocket references for house staff members on inpatient clinical rotations. This edition updates the 2016 edition.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide house staff a handy reference that covers the vast majority of issues they would encounter in their rotations. This pocket-sized book is one of the traditional house staff manuals that has been relied upon for decades. It provides clear and concise clinical information on the current standards of medical care for inpatient admissions.
Audience
The primary audience is house staff, but as a subspecialist practicing for 40 years, I still refer to it to stay current with the standards of medical care that have changed over the years. This is a book for everyone who rounds on inpatients, be they attending physicians, resident house staff or students on clerical rotations. The authors are leading educators from Washington University School of Medicine.
Features
The book begins with some general concepts of inpatient medicine and common admission diagnoses such as chest pain, dyspnea, acute hypertensive episodes, and altered mental status. These are followed by chapters generally divided into the traditional organ systems with additional sections on nutritional support, and solid organ transplant medicine. Each section is further divided into the issues and problems specific topics as such pulmonary hypertension, obstructive sleep apnea, graft rejection, functional gastrointestinal disorders. This edition has a greatly expanded section on medical emergencies and neurological diseases. The figures and tables are tremendously intuitive and there are just enough references to the pertinent literature.
Assessment
The print version has continued its outstanding contribution to medicine presenting an update of the basic information house staff should know and understand. Hopefully, this tradition will extend into the future. The VitalSource platform will need time to mature.
