Description
This book comprehensively covers the spectrum of traumatic brain injury for the multidisciplinary audience who is involved in the care of this patient population. It spans the entirety of the disease entity -- from the sports arena to the intensive care unit to inpatient rehabilitation to discharge -- and provides information to manage the potential issues that can arise at each step. |
Purpose
The purpose is to inclusively address the issues faced by the myriad of healthcare professionals involved in the care of patients with traumatic brain injury in a concise and compact manner, while directing them to more focused resources if desired. The book fulfills this important objective, resulting in an all-inclusive manual for clinicians that does not focus solely on one realm, but rather imparts information for all the specialties involved in the multidisciplinary care that is necessary for these patients. |
Audience
Written for the gamut of healthcare providers who treat TBI patients, the book is appropriate for resident and attending physicians in neurology, physiatry, and primary care, in addition to physical, occupational, and speech therapists. |
Features
The entire continuum of traumatic brain injury is addressed, from mild sports-related injuries to moderate and severe brain trauma as the result of catastrophic accidents. Core concepts and definitions introduce the subject and, in addition to the diagnosis and management of the various aspects of the disorder itself, the book covers epidemiology and prevention, associated medical complications, and social and legal aspects. The book is all-encompassing yet easy to read and understand. References listed at the end of each chapter for further reading are generally reputable and informative. In this manner, the book can serve as a succinct primary text on the disorder for use by any of the members involved in multidisciplinary care. Because of the multiple authors, chapters vary in format and do not always include summaries. Furthermore, while the graphics, tables, and algorithms are helpful and of high quality, the book could benefit from additional figures. |

Assessment
This is a stellar quality book that will be beneficial for every member of the multidisciplinary team that is required to treat patients with TBI. It offers a concise but broad and informative view of the disorder, and can serve as an easy-to-read and access primary text. |
