It is a complete yet concise overview of clinical ailments and how to manage them in cancer patients. Purpose The author notes in the preface that the hope is that the book will serve as a quick reference in treating a wide variety of acute and chronic health problems in cancer patients and any relationship between the health problem and the patient's cancer diagnosis. The book is much needed in an age where polypharmacy and comorbid health conditions afflict many patients, particularly those with cancer. This is a sound reference for this information. Audience The book is written for advanced practice nurses practicing in oncology, but it could be used by a variety of readers, including residents, physicians, or possibly even cancer patients themselves. Both authors/editors are advanced practice nurses who practice in oncology. Contributing authors, for the most part, are as well, or are professors or advanced practice nurses with expertise in related fields. Features The book is divided into sections that address various body systems, each with detailed information regarding specific disease states. The information includes definition, physiology/pathophysiology of the condition, description of the clinical features, signs and symptoms, physical exam, diagnostic tests, treatment, necessary follow-up, and any needed referrals. References are included to support the information. The book is well organized and consistent, making it easy to use and very comprehensive. Several helpful appendixes are additional resources for the advanced practice nurse. Assessment In the ever-changing world of healthcare and medicine, references such as this must be continually updated to maintain their relevancy. This book offers a guide and reference to assist those APNs working in oncology when they encounter other health conditions along with the patient's cancer diagnosis. Management of these ailments can be overwhelming, and concise, accurate information such as what this book offers is very helpful in determining the appropriate course of action.
