Description
This is a second edition of book that addresses the psychosocial issues and needs related to patients with cancer. The first edition was published seven years earlier.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide nurses and other healthcare providers with information that facilitates an understanding of what a cancer patient experiences in the psychosocial sphere of health needs. Being informed of the possible psychosocial needs is very important and the book definitely meets the objectives.
Audience
The book is written for nurses (with various degrees and certifications) and for other healthcare professionals who provide care for cancer patients and their family members/significant others. The editors and authors of chapters are credible authorities.
Features
This is a comprehensive resource that contains information about the psychosocial needs of individuals, families, and society impacted by cancer. It also explores specific psychological reactions that those populations may experience as well as suggesting specific interventions. Since the last edition, the authors have included information about evidence-based practice and have included information that would be relevant to nurse practitioners. Each chapter is prefaced by a quotation from a historical figure, group or famous person that capture the essence of the chapter and many are quite poignant. The chapters incorporate and tables and figures into the text. Case studies are also used to help the reader integrate the information. Although the book lacks color and illustrations, the information is presented well and very valuable.
Assessment
This is a wonderful reference for healthcare providers from various disciplines. The book is devoted to psychosocial topics which is its strength because the patient's psychosocial needs can be lost in the fast-paced, short-staffed, high-tech world of healthcare. In keeping with the trend in nursing, the authors have included information related to evidence-based practice, collaborative practice, and the shift to nurse practitioners. This additional information that was not included in the first edition is necessary in order to reflect current practices.
