This pocket-sized guide offers information and resources to facilitate psychiatric mental health assessments and formulation of related care plans by mental health nursing students and other nurse clinicians. It is organized for easy reference by client behaviors, psychiatric mental health categories, and DSM-5-TR psychiatric diagnoses. There are four units in the book which cover broad categories in psychiatric mental health nursing. The appendices provide psychiatric mental health screening tools, algorithms, and other assessment resources. The previous edition was published in 2021. |

Features
This book presents specific DSM-5-TR diagnoses with their related definitions, predisposing factors, and symptomology. Presentation of predisposing factors offers the clinician suggestions for patient and family teaching for primary prevention of disease and secondary prevention through screening. The book presents NANDA-I nursing diagnoses related to each medical diagnosis in the following format: related to; evidenced by; goals and objectives; interventions with rationales; and outcome criteria. This format lends itself to the creation of a comprehensive nursing care plan. Unit 1 discusses the nursing process, Unit 2 the childhood origins of most psychiatric disorders, Unit 3 community and psychosocial topics, and Unit 4 psychotropic medications. The book discusses in detail the use of alternative medicine or therapies and care of special and vulnerable populations and lists psychiatric medications by category with related medications following each category. |
Assessment
This pocket-sized guide is a valuable clinical resource that provides information on numerous psychiatric mental health disorders. It serves its purpose to help nursing students and professional nurses formulate care plans necessary to produce optimal patient outcomes. The twelfth edition has been updated with current evidence-based recommended treatments, drug therapies, and associated nursing interventions presented in a quick reference format. This justifies replacing the previous edition. |
