Description
| This book addresses critical issues affecting the health and well-being of those providing direct patient care while working in hospitals and other care facilities. The fact this 200-page book emerges as a second edition speaks to the topic's importance. Among other sources of approaches and information, the book credits both the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and also CDC's National Institute for Safety and Health with providing guidance. |

Purpose
| While not touted as a substitute for Joint Commission compliance, this handy book goes a long way toward preparing respondents for the types of questions and inquiries that site visitors will likely pose. There is also a good chance that attention to its seventy worksheets will exceed many inspection requirements. The basic approach is that of self-study, meaning that the questions must be answered in an honest, realistic manner rather than a reflection of ideal or sought-after goals. |

Audience
| The book's target audience is composed of clinical professionals, environmental and facilities staff, laboratory workers and phlebotomists, staff educators, human resources staff, and technicians. |

Features
| The table of contents outlines five chapters featuring tools that are formatted as questionnaires or checklists. Individual tools are referenced using Joint Commission standards with further deference to other recognized authorities such as the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. As an example, for Tool 1-9, applicable to hand hygiene, respondents answer written questions using a yes, no, or possibly "non-applicable" responses. The form reserves space for additional notes or comments. While the tools are copyrighted, the book provides a note that each can be adapted for internal use. |

Assessment
| Probably the most useful material occurs in the book's preface advising how to download tools. Most users will likely use the tools electronically although they can also be used as paper supplements. When originally assigned to this review, I questioned whether its preparers could prepare something that would be interesting to read. I found myself reading and re-reading key sections, reflecting upon experiences and the likelihood of compliance in home institutions. |
