Description
This book presents the Joint Commission overview of medication management standards, including most of the standards of the Comprehensive Accreditation Manual, in order to help develop a foundation in effective medication management systems.
Purpose
The purpose of this book is to provide a resource to those who direct, participate in, or support the medication management system within a healthcare organization. The book provides an in-depth explanation about the medication management standards in a simplistic fashion, making it easy for any audience to understand and put into action.
Audience
This book is written for a multidisciplinary group, including pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, nurses, physicians, accreditation professionals, and staff educators. The authors have diverse healthcare backgrounds including nurses, pharmacists, business, and quality improvement. Additionally, some of the authors serve as Joint Commission field surveyors for healthcare organizations. Given the complexity of health system medication management, this book is an excellent compilation to establish the importance and understanding of the multidisciplinary approach to successful medication management.
Features
This book covers most of the medication management standards including overview of medication management; selecting, procuring, safely securing, and storing medications; ordering and transcribing medications; preparing, dispensing, and administering medications; monitoring patient reactions; evaluating the medication management process; and establishing an antimicrobial stewardship program. While these are important and are covered well, some concepts are fairly straightforward, especially for those who have worked in a healthcare setting for some time. I personally would have liked to see more detail on the medication management standard related to high-alert/hazardous medications and look-alike/sound-alike medications. Overall, this book gives a good summary for those seeking an introduction to medication management standards or to bring staff up to speed on the importance of these standards in order to prepare for Joint Commission surveys. For seasoned staff, who have worked in a healthcare setting for a few years (especially pharmacists), this may be a more basic review.
Assessment
This book presents a nice concise review of the basic principles of medication management. It provides helpful explanations with examples where appropriate in relation to the medication management standards. This allows readers to better interpret, understand, and apply these standards in practice.
