Description
This book is an excellent, original contribution to teach pediatric providers about the many aspects of trauma-informed pediatric practice and how to organize their practice to be trauma-informed which is a relatively new approach to understanding and communicating with patients and their families.
Purpose
This well-organized, clinically and psychologically relevant book's purpose is to introduce and develop pediatric trauma-informed practice, as challenging as that is to formulate. The objectives are very worthy and difficult and are needed in practice. This book meets those objectives with the expertise of the authors and editors.
Audience
The primary audience includes pediatric clinicians and providers at all training levels who interact with patients. The book explains trauma informed care very well and meets the needs of the intended audience. The authors are credible authorities from different disciplines who have much practice experience developing trauma-informed pediatric practice.
Features
The book begins by explaining to the clinical audience what pediatric trauma-informed and responsive practice involves and the challenges that providers face in understanding and thoughtfully developing and practicing the discipline. The background information is important so the audience can understand this concept: the foundational concepts and barriers to create compassionate pediatric practices, build resilience, navigate barriers and develop thoughtful, sensitive, stable, nurturing relationships with patients and their families. The book covers areas including assessing risks, building relationships between caregivers and children, and building clinical skills and incorporating trauma responsiveness into practice.
Assessment
This book encourages pediatric practice without harm, providing benevolence, autonomy, and justice. This may be the first book of its kind in this area and is much needed. It requires a lot of concentration and sensitivity by pediatric providers as well as understanding of the concepts so the clinical information may be gathered, carefully documented, and utilized to provide help, therapy, support and to develop a safe, nurturing relationship with patients and families.
