Description
This book is a single volume, 1300-page pediatric reference book comprised of topics compiled from Pediatric Care Online, Red Book: 2024-2027 Report of the Committee on Infectious Diseases, 33rd Edition, Kimberlin et al. (AAP, 2024), and Bright Futures: Guidelines for Health Supervision of Infants, Children and Adolescents, 4th Edition, Hagan Jr., et al. (AAP, 2017). The previous edition was copyrighted in 2018. Each chapter discusses a symptom, diagnosis, or syndrome and they are printed in alphabetical order. The chapters open with a quick summary for the particular topic titled Key Points, and this is followed by a more in-depth discussion listed in bullet points. |
Purpose
In the preface, the editor in chief notes that this book is meant to provide an easily navigated collection of high-yield topics for quick reference between patient encounters. Due to the organization of this book into both symptoms and conditions rather than systems-based or similar, quickly finding the correct chapter may not be entirely intuitive. However, this can be remedied by using the index rather than table of contents as a starting point, making this a useful quick reference. |
Audience
Within the preface, the editor in chief describes this book as beneficial to "everyone taking care of children," and I would agree. While he specifically identifies pediatricians, pediatric residents, and medical students, this book would similarly be helpful for family medicine and emergency providers as well. While the topics covered may not be exhaustive for pediatric medicine, they are extremely high yield. The compilation of three different and highly esteemed pediatric resources makes this title a very credible resource. |
Features
The chapters within this text cover a broad range of topics. These range from the nebulous Abdominal Pain and Emotional Problems to the specific Human Herpes Viruses 6A, 6B and 7, and Pierre-Robin Sequence. The book contains the overwhelming majority of its information in bullet-point form; however, certain topics include tables as well. There are no images. Each chapter delineates basic terminology pertinent to the topic followed by diagnosis, management, and ongoing care. Overall, the bulleted format makes skimming the text simple but additional reading for context is sometimes necessary to clarify meaning. |
Assessment
Overall, this book is a beneficial text that compiles multiple pediatric resources produced by the American Academy of Pediatrics into brief, bulleted summaries. The best use of this book is "on the go" between patient encounters or for a quick refresher. This update from the previous edition is necessary due to the ever-changing nature of medicine and specifically pediatric medicine. |
