Description
| This is a compact book produced by the American Academy of Pediatrics designed to support clinical decision-making regarding treatment of infections in neonates. The book includes a number of tables to summarize key features of specific drugs and types of infections. The previous edition was published in 2019. |
Purpose
| The purpose of the book is to serve as a resource to those caring for newborns. Antibiotics are the most prescribed medications in neonatal populations and have potential for good or for harm. The book seeks to provide clinicians with information regarding the characteristics of specific drugs and their indications, to support excellent clinical care of neonatal patients. This book is an outstanding clinical guide for neonatal care providers, condensing key concepts into a compact handbook. The book is essential for anyone involved in caring for newborns, since neonates are significantly different from older pediatric patients. This book meets its objectives by highlighting the most common infections in neonates, the most used antimicrobial agents, and many of the important considerations for treatment approach. |

Audience
| This book provides clinical guidance for anyone involved in caring for newborns. The book is highly relevant for pediatricians, hospitalists, and neonatologists, and would be helpful for students or trainees in pediatrics and neonatal medicine as well. This book has a narrow scope, limited to characteristics and indications for antimicrobial use in neonates. The straightforward and organized way the information is presented supports the aims of the book in allowing for streamlined guidance in evaluation and treatment of suspected or confirmed neonatal infections. The editors are respected in the field, with this title having served as a foundational pediatric text for generations. The American Academy of Pediatrics, an organization that is trusted and respected by pediatricians worldwide, developed this text. |

Features
| This book provides both general and specific guidelines to clinicians caring for neonates with possible or proven infections. The first section reviews types of antimicrobial agents and their indications, followed by a section which reviews more specific aspects of individual drugs. The book includes guidance on dosing for each drug, with attention to potential toxicities and notes about the pharmacokinetics and excretion. This section is particularly helpful for clinicians in ensuring accurate dosing and monitoring for toxicity for each agent utilized in treatment of neonatal infections. The following four sections review specific characteristics and treatment recommendations for types of neonatal infections: bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic. Finally, the last section includes comments and considerations regarding antibiotic stewardship and infection prevention. The organization of the book makes it extremely useful to serve as a reference and clinical decision-making support for the practitioner at the bedside. By organizing information by specific drug and by specific infection, it is easy to find the information needed for patient care. The book is also fairly short and highly relevant to clinical care. The book presents the information in multiple formats - summarized in tables but also presented in long-form with additional details. This aids in obtaining the level of information desired from the book to support clinical care decisions. This is a guidebook with a narrow scope, and despite its small size it is comprehensive in nature. It does an excellent job compiling necessary information to support clinicians in utilizing antimicrobial therapies. To accommodate the small size of the printing, the tables are oriented in a manner that requires the reader to turn the book sideways to read, which one may find irritating. |

Assessment
| This is an outstanding clinical guidebook and an essential reference for anyone caring for neonates. The main strength of this book is how it is both comprehensive yet concise. Practitioners may be familiar with the AAP Red Book, which is the recognized authority on pediatric infectious diseases. The Red Book is an excellent reference text but is over 1000 pages in length and is not specific to neonates. This book is less than 100 pages and is targeted towards neonatal patients, making it a far more practical guide to have on hand. Many practitioners have moved towards electronic sources to obtain clinical information, but the compact size of this book and its extreme navigability make it an essential text for the neonatal care provider. The major update from the previous edition published in 2019 is the addition of Nirsevimab, which was FDA approved in 2023 for the prevention of RSV. Many of the other elements in the book are consistent with the previous edition. The major update from the previous edition published in 2019 is the addition of Nirsevimab, which was FDA approved in 2023 for the prevention of RSV.
