Description
This book is one of the American Academy of Pediatrics' collections of specialty specific articles including key policy statements and research on pediatric topics, this one focusing on pediatric sports medicine. The first section includes comprehensive information regarding concussion in the pediatric athlete; the second section covers the pre-participation exam and injury issues, and the final section addresses what is known about risks and benefits of pediatric sports participation.
Purpose
The intent of this book is to provide a convenient compilation of up-to-date information that is pertinent to the practitioner caring for pediatric patients, including athletes as well as kids who are simply active. The topics are important and pertinent, although readers will need to be conscious of evolving developments in the growing field of sports medicine as time goes by.
Audience
This book will be helpful to pediatric and sports medicine learners at all levels. Clinicians providing care for student athletes or covering athletic events will likely find it a very helpful reference.
Features
The first section is a collection of publications regarding concussion. The editor acknowledges that this is an ever-changing body of knowledge, but the selected articles provide thorough coverage of the (currently) most up-to-date information regarding evaluation, treatment, and return-to-play criteria, as well as information about prolonged and post-concussive symptoms. One section includes articles regarding the pre-participation exam, injuries, infectious disease issues pertinent to the athlete and athletic events, the female athletic triad, and certain sports-specific injury risks. The last section covers risks and benefits of sports and physical activity and includes good information about sports training, sports specialization, overuse, and recommendations for counseling in the clinical setting. The date of publication of all the content is conveniently included in the table of contents; there are a couple articles from Pediatrics in Review in which the date of publication is not included with the full article, however.
Assessment
Some redundancy of material is to be expected as this is a compilation of articles; however, each article does clearly focus on a distinct and pertinent aspect of pediatric sports medicine topics. For learners, this is a succinct collection of important information about pediatric sports medicine. For practitioners, the collection will most likely save internet search time by serving as a helpful office reference for those seeing a lot of young athletes.
