Description
Devoted to pediatric dermatology, this book follows the format of two well-known clinical diagnosis books: Skin Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment, 4th edition, Habif et al. (Elsevier, 2018), and Fitzpatrick's Color Atlas and Synopsis of Clinical Dermatology, 8th edition, Wolff et al. (McGraw Hill, 2017). The presentation makes recognition and diagnosis of commonly seen pediatric skin conditions a snap. A feature unique to this book is the section of "Resources for Families" at the end of each chapter. Websites and educational handouts for additional information are provided. This fourth edition updates the 2016 edition.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a quick and accurate resource for diagnosing and treating skin problems of children.
Audience
The audience is pediatricians, family practitioners, and dermatology residents.
Features
The information is well organized, meeting the book's goal of being a quick reference guide. Differential diagnoses are listed for most conditions. However, the authors have thoughtfully described clinical tips on how to differentiate similar looking conditions. The color photos are excellent quality and demonstrate subtle epidermal and dermal details important for proper diagnosis. Salient points on etiology, symptoms, treatment, and prognosis are summarized in bullet-point format. Treatment advice is practical and easy to understand and there is advice on how to decide when to refer the patient to an expert.
Assessment
Any primary care professional who sees pediatric patients will find this book invaluable. Although there are many excellent pediatric dermatology books available, few are this accessible as fast, reliable, and intuitive references.
