Description
This is the eighth edition of a practical guide for maternal, fetal, and neonatal care prepared by the American Academy of Pediatrics Committee of the Fetus and Newborn and the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology. This is meant to be a "how-to" manual for review and organization of the care of the mother, fetus, and newborn. It provides guidelines for levels of care as well.
Purpose
The purpose is to describe how to organize and evaluate the care of the pregnant woman, fetus, and newborn infant in a facility setting. Guidelines are provided in chapter format and the book is meant to be a quick reference as well as a more detailed reference for administrators, clinicians (nursing, physicians, and nurse practitioners) who are responsible for organizing, monitoring, and evaluating care. This book meets these objectives and should be a first review resource.
Audience
This book is really meant for providers, administrators, and quality improvement officers as a first reference. The authors and contributors are very credible authorities/experts who provide the most current information and guidelines for care of the mother, fetus and newborn. There is also attention to a patient and family-centered approach to care.
Features
The book is organized in two major sections on maternal/fetal care and neonatal care. The chapters are presented in narrative form with appropriate tables to emphasize management. This book can be used for a quick reference to an aspect of care or approach to care or as a more detailed reference for organizational purposes. The approach is meant to be concise, practical, and clinically relevant for providers and administrators.
Assessment
I highly recommend this as a practical resource for providers and administrators who are responsible for maternal/fetal and newborn care. This is the kind of book that can be used as a quick resource to check the criteria for provision of care of a mother/fetus or newborn. It may also be used when an organizational group is interested in evaluating or reevaluating their program as well as their referral network for maternal/fetal and neonatal care.
