Description
This is the fourth edition of a book of current guidelines and references for general pediatricians in everyday practice. It was last published in 2008.
Purpose
The purpose is to support all members of the American Academy of Pediatrics in taking care of all children. It should be used as support and guidance for pediatricians, families, and their communities. This is truly a great reference for a quick look up or a more in-depth explanation of practice.
Audience
It is written for all pediatricians, whether early residents or attendings who have been practicing for years. The authors are knowledgeable and valued in the field of pediatrics.
Features
An important aspect of this book is that it tackles subjects that can be difficult in pediatrics, such as mental health, healthy weight, physical activity, sexual development and sexuality, and the healthy and safe use of social media. It also includes guidelines for, and the importance of, having a medical home for children and their families. This book is well known to pediatricians and it is a standard of practice to adopt its recommendations. One of the things I most appreciate about this edition is the new theme of "Promoting Lifelong Health for Families and Communities." Every day I am reminded of the importance of promoting the well-being of parents and caregivers and how impactful that is for our patients. I and my partners pride ourselves in following and practicing evidence-based medicine, and this book helps us do that.
Assessment
This is an excellent, overall review of the most up-to-date information for pediatricians. It includes new essential topics for contemporary practice. Because of its emphasis on providing for patients, families, and communities, this book will be a welcome addition to any collection.
