Description
This update of an overview of the field of psychiatry integrates the new DSM-5. The previous edition was published in 2007.
Purpose
Providing an overview of the entire field of psychiatry is a worthy objective, which this book accomplishes.
Audience
The intended audience includes "clinicians, residents, students, and all others who provide mental health care." While anyone in this broad category would potentially benefit from this book, practicing psychiatrists would likely get the most out of it.
Features
The 37 chapters cover the major areas in psychiatry, including psychiatric diseases across all populations, psychopharmacology and psychotherapeutic treatment options, the contributions of psychiatry to the modern world, and proper examination and diagnostic methods. Each chapter contains helpful illustrations, case presentations, charts, tables, and graphs. Chapters are divided into subsections that end with their own reference sections. The book ends with a helpful glossary and index. This edition also includes an access to an interactive ebook version.
Assessment
I continue to be impressed with this book. With a 40-year history of continued revisions, it is simply the best overall review. Compared to books like The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Psychiatry, 6th edition (American Psychiatric Publishing, 2014), this is more efficient in its ability to inform readers about a specific topic of interest. This edition is superb in explaining the changes of the DSM-5, which is the main point of this update. If you were to purchase one review book, this would be the one.
