Description
This is a comprehensive guide to perinatal nursing and the components needed to adequately care for women and childbearing families.
Purpose
The authors intend to provide a comprehensive, evidence-based reference for nurses caring for childbearing families in the perinatal period. This is an excellent resource that meets the objectives.
Audience
Written for a nursing audience, advanced practice nurses and other obstetrical care providers could benefit from this book. The authors are well respected and make a significant contribution to the body of literature in this field.
Features
The book covers safety issues and spans the pregnancy, labor and birth, postpartum, and newborn periods. Concise tables and labeled displays highlight important information. There are a limited number of photos, but they are well placed and necessary to illustrate the content. The authors cover physical variations, but fail to address any psychological variations in the childbearing years. Postpartum depression is listed only in two tables and the book lacks discussion of other perinatal mood and anxiety disorders.
Assessment
This is an important reference that is both complete and concise. Readers wishing more detailed anatomy and physiology would need to turn to a different source. This could not be used in place of an undergraduate nursing maternity book, but it is a good reference that would make an excellent companion. The evidence-based approach it takes is imperative in modern books.
