Description
This is the fifth edition of a highly successful textbook of general surgery.
Purpose
It provides an overview of surgical science and practice for practitioners at all levels.
Audience
Practitioners of all degrees of sophistication will benefit from this work originating from the leadership in academic surgical programs in the United States. Many of the authors and editors are from the University of Michigan.
Features
After a review of basic science, the vast majority of this 2,000-page book covers surgical practice beginning with trauma and transplantation and continuing by organ system. An extensive group of chapters describe vascular diseases, but orthopedics, urology, and neurologic problems get little coverage. Chapters are highly detailed and well written. Key references and important summary concepts are highlighted. Color drawings, which reproduce with superb quality, effectively illustrate anatomy and operative technique. Color photographs, in general, are also of high quality, but black-and-white photographs do not reproduce well. References featuring primary literature date to within three years of publication. The table of contents groups chapters by type of content and lists authorship while the subject index provides separate citations for figures and tables.
Assessment
This update of Greenfield's Surgery maintains the excellent production standards of previous editions, although I was disappointed at the loss of focused reviews in orthopedics, neurosurgery, gynecology, and urology. Chapters on these topics and an expanded presentation of laparoscopic technique may be found in another recent update, Schwartz's Principles of Surgery, 9th edition, Brunicardi et al. (McGraw-Hill, 2010). However, as a teaching aid, Greenfield's Surgery, which features an online image bank and search engine, remains the leader in its class.
