The workbook, combined with the Joint Commission standards for all areas in infection prevention, constitutes a great resource for anyone looking at starting or improving their program. Purpose The purpose is to provide a tool that can help infection preventionists assess the effectiveness of their current systems, implement hands-on solutions to protect everyone in their organization from dangerous infections, and improve compliance with Joint Commission infection prevention and control standards and National Patient Safety Goals. These are worthy objectives, and revisions are necessary with the developments in patient safety goals and new guidelines. The book meets these objectives. This book is more informative and educational rather than a workbook. There is an electronic version available. Audience The book is targeted at infection preventionists. Infectious disease and epidemiology practitioners, as well as those in administrative roles in the area of infection prevention and control, would benefit from this resource. The authors are the leading experts in the infection prevention community, APIC, and the Joint Commission. Features The book begins with surveillance and leadership then moves into a risk assessment. It explores the Joint Commission Infection Control (IC) standards. The book does a great job of providing strategies for an effective program for the overall facility. Many strategies are discussed in great detail. The book uses some visual aids to deliver some of these strategies and tools. The book has sidebars throughout that invite readers to further evaluate different areas of their program. I would have liked to see more interpretation of the IC standards. Assessment This edition provides relevant information, including in areas where there have been changes in the past three to four years.
