Description
This is a comprehensive review of international best practices in infection prevention and control (IPC). The examples, tables, and appendixes are excellent tools to assist and guide infection control programs in meeting current Joint Commission International (JCI) requirements in this area.
Purpose
The purpose is to make clear to infection prevention and control programs what the Joint Commission strives to do more broadly for healthcare -- to help healthcare organizations maintain unprecedented levels of safety and quality for all patients and staff with improvement tools and targeted solutions so patients and their families will be protected from infection more reliably.
Audience
This book is written for any healthcare professional or leader involved with infection prevention and control programs, Joint Commission readiness, and patient safety related to IPC. The editor and contributing authors are recognized in their countries and internationally as authorities in this area.
Features
Covering best practices in IPC internationally, this book uses examples from various countries. These examples are applicable to settings in any country, including the U.S., since microorganisms travel globally and there are similar issues, problematic organisms, and room for improvement in all IPC programs. The sample tools presented in tables are excellent guides for best practice with topics such as: foodborne illness, healthcare-associated infections, flu vaccine, and antimicrobial stewardship. The two appendixes alone make the book worthwhile - the JCI IPC requirements checklist and the listing of IPC web resources. This is an excellent book!
Assessment
This high-quality book presents specific strategies and checklists to guide quality improvement. The daunting requirements of JCI for IPC are presented in an easy to follow checklist, which explains what type of written documentation is needed, if any. This is extremely useful as an excellent resource for guiding IPC programs and readiness for JCI surveys. This second edition expands and updates references and requirements from the first edition.
