Description
This revised and updated seventh edition book provides stability monographs of 196 parenteral drugs, including more than 35 new drugs. It also offers brief theoretical and legal aspects of the compounding of parenteral drugs and nutrition. |
Purpose
Pharmacists often seek stability data for their compounded sterile preparations. Accordingly, the book provides up-to-date information on the stability of parenteral preparations with the aim of reducing patients' risks from physical, chemical, and microbial degradation of compounded sterile products. |
Audience
The book will be helpful to pharmacists working in any facility where parenteral drugs are stored and compounded. It is primarily intended as a reference guide for pharmacists involved in storing and compounding sterile preparations. Similar to the previous editions, this seventh edition will be well utilized by pharmacists involved in sterile compounding. |
Features
This book provides stability monographs of 196 parenteral medications, including 37 new drugs. The contents are presented in three parts. The first part briefly discusses theoretical aspects of factors affecting drug stability, the use of stability data, assigning beyond-use dates, quality assurance, and legal aspects related to parenteral drug and nutrition compounding. The second part of the book offers stability data of parenteral medications, including the stability of drugs in different types of containers with different diluents and at different concentrations, pH, and temperatures, where available, along with references. The last part of the book includes appendices and an index. One of the appendices provides the manufacturer and compounded abbreviations, while the other presents a glossary of terms used in the book. The paper quality could be improved. The authors should also consider including a chapter on drugs that become toxic upon degradation in future editions. |
Assessment
This book provides useful data for pharmacists involved in compounding sterile preparations. There are not many comparable texts available on the market. Trissel's Stability of Compounded Formulations, 6th Edition, (American Pharmacy Association, 2018) is a good reference, but it has not been updated recently. Therefore, this book will serve its purpose well. |
