Description
This book covers basic concepts in pharmacokinetics as well as their application to drug dosing, with numerous examples, clinical correlates, and practice quizzes. The previous edition was published in 2014.
Purpose
The aim is to introduce pharmacokinetics concepts to students for the first time or provide a review for practitioners. The review of concepts is also ideal for those preparing for board or specialty certification exams. The book does an excellent job of meeting these objectives, as it simplifies complex topics in pharmacokinetics. There are numerous examples and cases for practice, as well as quizzes with answers to test one's knowledge.
Audience
The book is perfect for a basic course in pharmacokinetics, as it contains 15 chapters, ideal for a semester of learning. Students can quickly pick up the material from the easy to follow lessons with examples and cases, as well as practice quizzes. Practitioners moving from one specialty to another who will perhaps be dosing more medications can learn from the chapters specific to medications -- aminoglyosides, vancomycin, phenytoin, digoxin, and theophylline. The authors are all experts in the field of pharmacy education who really know how to break down complex subject matter.
Features
The majority of the book covers basic concepts in pharmacokinetics, and it does a superb job of simplifying these complex topics. The writing is easy to follow, and the numerous examples make the material come alive. Each chapter opens with clearly outlined objectives, so students understand what is covered in that section. Concepts are clearly defined and depicted through graphs for visual learners. Clinical correlates are dispersed throughout each chapter and enable readers to see how the information is applied in clinical practice. Key equations used in the chapter are summarized at the end of the section, and review questions enable readers to test their knowledge. The answers are provided to allow students to immediately check their performance. Supplemental problems are provided at the end of the book, as well as a glossary of terms. Overall, the authors succeed in teaching a complicated subject in a way that is easy to follow and understand.
Assessment
This is a very useful book for students, practitioners, or individuals preparing for board examinations. This edition includes a phenytoin "cheat sheet" to help learners through the calculation maze associated with nonlinear pharmacokinetics, new vancomycin equations based on higher trough target levels, and an enhanced discussion of hemodialysis effects on pharmacokinetics.
