It discusses pharmacy operations and the role of pharmacy technicians, pharmacy laws and regulations, different types of pharmacy practice, human anatomy, drug classification and pharmacological actions, basics of biopharmaceutics, definitions of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, medication dosage forms and routes of administration, effective communication skills and components, processing medication orders and prescriptions, pharmacy calculations, nonsterile compounding and repackaging, aseptic technique, sterile compounding and IV admixture programs, medication safety, pharmacy informatics and technology, pharmaceutical supply chain management, billing and reimbursement, and real-world professional issues. The previous edition was published in 2010. Purpose It is designed as an instruction manual for pharmacy technician students enrolled in a formal pharmacy technician training program who intend to take the Pharmacy Technicians Certification Exam and for workplace training of pharmacy technicians. These are important objectives. The book meets the objectives of helping pharmacy technicians to succeed in the training program and on the certification test. However, much of what this book covers is not necessary for technicians to do well on the job and it would be better for them to focus on other areas to be effective at various aspects of their job for better patient safety, better workflow, and improved assistance to pharmacists in pharmacy practice. More attention should be paid to drug distribution and delivery and technology in hospitals, effective ways for pharmacy technicians to triage phone calls and to improve work flow, and systems of checking and double checking their work before giving it to a pharmacist to avoid mistakes and improve accuracy and accountability. The concepts of cooperation skills and making patient needs the driver of the pharmacist technician's job are overlooked in this book. The pharmacist's role is to ensure the patient medication regimen is appropriate, safe, and accurately delivered in a timely manner. The technician's job is to aid in the delivery of these services. Audience The book is written for students enrolled in a pharmacy technician certification program intending to take the certification exam and for use as a pharmacy technician work training manual. The book will help students get through a technician program and pass the certification test. The authors are pharmacists. Features The book covers wide variety of topics in pharmacy practice. It does a great job describing emotional and social awareness. Pharmacy law and regulations are briefly touched on as they relate to pharmacy technicians. Several chapters are dedicated to an in-depth review of human anatomy, drug classifications and actions, pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as well as medication dosage forms and routes of administration. The book also has an in-depth chapter on pharmacy calculations. It has an overabundance of medical content, and is somewhat lacking in discussions of topics such as professional communications, tracking deliveries, emphasis on patient safety, medication delivery/storage and distribution systems, work flow efficiency and improvement, technician/pharmacist cooperation and synchronicity, customer service and an emphasis on the professional universal purpose of patient safety, safe and efficacious use of medications, and patient well-being and outcomes. The book has a lot of illustrations, charts and tables, self-assessment quizzes at the ends of chapters, and a useful glossary. Assessment This book has a lot of quality information, and the chapter quizzes are excellent. This new edition is necessary because of the changes since the 2010 edition, including changes in pharmacy informatics and pharmacy billing and purchasing, the addition of new responsibilities for pharmacy technicians, and updates to USP standards.
