Description
The three sections of this book cover the fundamental principles of pharmacogenomics; application of pharmacogenomic information in commonly encountered disease states; and important issues related to pharmacogenomics such as the pharmacist's role, ethical considerations, and the place of genomics in the pharmacy curriculum. Each chapter begins with a set of learning objectives and a section of key definitions. Case studies and clinical pearls round out each chapter.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a resource for pharmacists, pharmacy educators, and pharmacy students to gain a basic understanding of pharmacogenomics. The editor wanted the book to be easy to understand, relevant to the practice of pharmacy, timely, and organized in a manner that would allow it to be used for either a core or elective course. The book meets these objectives.
Audience
Pharmacy students and the broad spectrum of pharmacy practitioners are the intended audience. The applications described in Part II focus on a number of therapeutic areas (cardiovascular disease, hematology-oncology, CNS diseases, infectious diseases, respiratory diseases, and toxicogenomics). Those who practice in other specialty areas will still find the book useful for understanding the science behind pharmacogenomics, and in gaining an appreciation for the potential effects of genomic testing on the individual and society. Each chapter is authored by individuals with expertise and relevant experience.
Features
Pharmacogenomics is an extraordinarily complex topic and one that can serve as a prototype of translational (i.e. bench to bedside) research. The relatively recent insertion of pharmacogenomics into the pharmacy curriculum suggests that the majority of pharmacy practitioners will have little or no formal training in this area. To address this, the first section reviews genetic principles and describes various genotyping methodologies. Other chapters in the section detail the effects of genetic polymorphism on drug metabolism, drug transport, and drug-receptor interactions. Part II describes pharmacogenetic differences that have been associated with effectiveness and/or side effects of a variety of medications across common disease states. Importantly, the authors of these sections point out where genomic testing is necessary and where additional studies are required. The final section deals with issues relevant to pharmacy practitioners and educators, such as the ethics of genomic testing, when testing is important, and the potential roles for pharmacists in obtaining and applying pharmacogenomic information. Having the definition of key terms at the beginning of each chapter is useful.
Assessment
While there are other books on pharmacogenomics, this one is unique in its approach to the topic and, to my knowledge, is the first to be written with pharmacy students (or practicing pharmacists) as the target audience. It provides sufficient information about the science of genomic testing to intelligently discuss the topic without getting bogged down in the intricacies the statistical analysis. This book should be a part of the library for anyone with an interest in pharmacogenomics.
