Description
This is a novel book that highlights the unwanted effect of drugs using an organ-specific approach. This organization allows readers to focus more on the disease state versus individually searching out specific agents that may be causing the pathology.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide insight into how certain drugs may actually cause or contribute to different disease states in an organ-specific fashion. It also identifies patient populations at risk, how to manage these iatrogenic diseases, and, at times, avoid them altogether.
Audience
The audience is broad and the book should definitely be of most interest to physicians and pharmacists involved in drug therapy management. Diagnosticians should find the book helpful as iatrogenic drug causation of certain disease states that may go unrecognized are discussed in this book. It is authored by many different pharmacists based on the area of their specialty or interest.
Features
This book first provides a very nice overview of adverse drug reactions in general, definitions, patient populations at risk, reporting systems, etc. Then the book takes the reader on a virtual physical examination from head to toe, highlighting disease states by organ system and the drugs that are most associated with causing or exacerbating pre-existing, co-morbid disease states. Some chapters are more complete than others, as is often seen in multiauthored books, and, of course, the reader shall need to decide if the information is sufficient or if further references need to be explored.
Assessment
There are not too many books that are totally dedicated to adverse drug reactions in a drug-induced, organ-specific format. As a pharmacy educator who teaches a class of the same title, I shall find this book useful as a primary text for my pharmacy students. Very often to encompass such material, individual review of the medical literature is required, but this book certainly summarizes some of the most germane disease states caused by drugs.
