Description
This book does a very good job addressing a topic that can be easily forgotten since pharmacy practice has diverted from compounding in many cases due to large scale manufacturing. It compiles all currently available stability information on drugs in compounded preparations. The book splits each drug into various sections, which help guides readers, and it is alphabetized rather than split into pharmaceutical categories. The recipes are neatly listed, and the only possible enhancement would be to give more direction on how to make specific compounds. On the other hand, I do understand need to be concise and that this information can be found elsewhere. The previous edition was published in 2012, but since then new laws and regulations have passed, and the pharmaceutical industry has really grown, especially in the area of biologics. |

Purpose
The purpose is to provide a resource on the stability of various compounded formulations. It provides the stability of the compounded solutions in various environments such as room temperature and refrigeration. It also provides different ways something can be compounded; for example, for budesonide mouthwash, the book lists the ingredients to compound this item with the budesonide capsules as well as budesonide powder. This book is absolutely needed because it can be a quite burdensome task to gather all the information in order to compound a particular product. In addition, patient populations go far beyond those studied in clinical trials for the product. This book really gives readers a resource to help them tailor medications. |
Audience
This primary audience is pharmacists, but the book is also useful for others, such as physicians and veterinarians. Healthcare professionals who need a source to help them tailor medications can all use this book. As a pharmacist, I found the book easy to navigate. The terminology it uses is appropriate, but may not be easy to understand for other healthcare professionals. All of the authors have experience in compounding and are considered specialists. Lawrence Trissel has been a big part of the advancement of pharmacy, especially in the compounding of sterile and nonsterile formulations. |

Features
Coming up with compounds for special populations can be difficult, especially when considering different situations, such as feeding. This book addresses this issue. For example, abacavir comes in liquid and tablet dosage forms, and this book considers the stability of this drug in an enteral feeding. This is a very important consideration because not all patients can take things by mouth. This book also describes how to tailor medications to other populations, like children and the elderly, who have different characteristics that are not addressed in clinical trials, such as varying absorption and distribution. This book does a great job of giving information on how to compound medication safely for these different populations. For each drug, the book presents different sections such as pH, properties, and different stability considerations. Although the book is very easy to understand, it would benefit from a glossary to define terms that aren't routinely used in general pharmacy practice; this would benefit nonpharmacy professionals as well. As a clinical pharmacist who does not compound daily, I had to look elsewhere for definitions of some of the terms. Certainly, compounding pharmacists would easily be able to understand the material. The order of how a product is made also help readers. Tables throughout enhance readers understanding of compatibility. It would have been helpful to use tables in the discussion of stability in varying temperatures. Readers can use the vast amount of references to easily find more information The book is in alphabetical order, which already makes it very easy to navigate, but it also includes an index that helps readers find material they are looking for. |

Assessment
This book is the ultimate source for stability of nonsterile compounded formulations, and it is very inclusive, profiling drugs in every class. Other books provide information on stability, such as Extemporaneous Formulations for Pediatric, Geriatric, and Special Needs Patients, 3rd edition, Jew et al. (ASHP, 2016). Although it details the various recipes as well as the days the formulation is stable, it does not go into the details of stability like this one does. Of course, there are also articles and other published literature on nonsterile compounded medications, but they are not as inclusive as this book. Organizations such as Institute for Safe Medication Practices provide general information about stability of nonsterile compounded products, but it is not drug specific like this book is. In addition, many institutions have their own references on compounded materials, some of which are specific to that institution. This book, on the other hand, is more inclusive. It is a good starting point, providing a sort of baseline knowledge of the compounded drug. |
