Description
This is a unique and timely review of the greatest threat to human health -- obesity and diabetes in the adolescent population. The authors highlight the importance of early and thorough prevention, as well as assessment and treatment of obesity in this age group. The pathophysiology of obesity in adolescents is multifactorial and not a necessarily chosen condition. The aim, therefore, is to provide an update on key areas in obesity medicine including genetics, emotional health, and effects on growth and puberty with insights into treatment including medical nutrition therapy.
Purpose
The purpose is to highlight aspects of adolescent obesity with important updates on type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The burden of both continues to grow, thus the authors include a very thorough review of available technology for children with diabetes. This review is timely and necessary for any providers taking care of children with diabetes.
Audience
Presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics Section on Adolescent Health as an Adolescent Medicine State of the Art Review, the book is intended for any practitioners who manage adolescents. Written by experts in the field of adolescent obesity, the book addresses various topics that include avoiding weight bias and stigma, laboratory evaluation of obesity (and consequences thereof), dietary as well as behavioral strategies in weight management, among others.
Features
The book covers various topics such as adolescent weight management in the primary care setting to disorders of growth and puberty in obesity to management of type 1 and 2 diabetes in obese adolescents. It has a noteworthy review of all the current technology available to adolescents with type 1 that is completely up to date and important for pediatric practitioners. There are no omissions except for a discussion of the presence of vitamin D deficiency in this vulnerable population.
Assessment
This is a high quality review of the consequences of obesity in the adolescent population and how it pertains and relates to the increasing prevalence of pediatric diabetes.
