Description
This is compendium of information about the diagnosis and management of pediatric diseases from various American Academy of Pediatrics' publications. The bulleted format, while good for quick reference, makes it difficult to peruse the book for long periods.
Purpose
It is intended to be the go-to reference guide for busy pediatricians. There is a need for such a book, and this one meets that need in some respects as it is comprehensive, accurate, well edited, and indexed. Its main drawbacks are its bulk, formatting that makes it difficult to read for extended periods, and lack of algorithms for management.
Audience
The book is targeted at busy pediatricians who need a quick guide and reference. It may be helpful to them in guiding initial workup and therapy and helping create a differential diagnosis list.
Features
Overall, the presentations are short, accurate, and effective in communicating what pediatricians need for a pediatric workup and for initiating care. The book does not appear to be as appropriate for students or even residents as teaching or reading material. In the pediatric hematology/oncology section, it would have been better to have an overview of cancer predisposition and genetics followed by clear and concise segments on specific tumors rather than keeping prognosis and treatment together. Unfortunately, the pictures are presented as a group and not attached to the case scenarios.
Assessment
This book will certainly be useful as a quick reference for busy pediatricians and family practice physicians to guide initial management and plan therapy for their patients. It may be useful to review for the boards, as it is a compendium of various AAP publications and consensus statements. The book would benefit from more pictures and from their placement with the clinical scenarios.
