Description
This multimedia workbook provides a start to finish approach to the management of a wide array of sports medicine injuries in the pediatric and adolescent population. It begins with a practical review of the components of the sports medicine evaluation including taking an appropriate clinical history, performing a focused physical exam, and ordering and interpreting suitable imaging studies. The book is case based, organized by anatomical region, and accompanied by a helpful DVD.
Purpose
This workbook is meant to provide medical practitioners with a framework to properly evaluate and treat athletic injuries in the pediatric and adolescent population. With the numbers of children participating in competitive or recreational athletics increasing every year, the book aims to help physicians in providing appropriate sports medicine care to this population. Many physicians caring for children and adolescents have had minimal formal training in the management of musculoskeletal injuries. This book is meant to be a guide and reference for use in the office or as a learning module. The authors have been able to achieve all of these goals in any easy to follow multimedia format.
Audience
Pediatricians, family physicians, nurse practitioners, residents, and medical students caring for young athletes are the intended audience. The book is aimed at general physicians and trainees rather than sports medicine specialists and orthopedists.
Features
The workbook covers the evaluation and management of various sports injuries organized by anatomic region and using a case-based approach. Each chapter reviews the anatomy and physical examination techniques along with numerous examples of radiographs or other imaging studies. This includes appropriate components of the clinical history, physical examination, ordering and interpretation of imaging studies, and review of the rehabilitation of each injury along with guidelines for return to play. The DVD provides live action demonstrations of exam techniques and rehabilitation exercises to augment the written word and pictures. The DVD is an extremely useful adjunct to the workbook, allowing practitioners to actually see how to perform many of the orthopedic examination maneuvers and rehabilitation exercises important in the diagnosis and treatment of sports injuries. The role of referral to physical therapy in the rehabilitative process and guidelines for eventual return to play are also discussed. Case studies depicting common sports injuries in that anatomical region are then provided, start to finish, including treatment and rehabilitation of each injury. A chapter on concussion rounds out the workbook. Two appendixes provide references for sports-injury related articles and patient handouts.
Assessment
This workbook provides excellent, up-to-date instruction in the evaluation and management of many sports medicine injuries for general practitioners, residents, or medical students. The format with its case study approach makes it easy to read and follow and it is fairly comprehensive including many of the most common musculoskeletal injuries one would encounter in the office. The accompanying DVD is particularly helpful, setting this workbook apart from other sports medicine references for primary care physicians.
