Purpose
This is a well-established and highly regarded publication that meets the need for unbiased, scientifically based information about natural products. Natural products are often undefined in medicine and are potentially dangerous in combination with many medication regimens. This is also an area of medicine that in which practitioners do not get an adequate education.
Audience
This book is intended for practitioners and residents. It provides healthcare professionals with a quick, up-to-date, objective assessment of the latest medical and scientific studies on numerous natural products, including medically active foods (nutraceuticals).
Features
This reference covers dietary supplement regulations, evidence-based grapefruit interactions, evidence-based herb-drug interactions, herbal diuretics, mushroom poisoning decision chart, mushroom societies, poison center contacts, use of herbal medicinal products during pregnancy and lactation, as well as a thorough alphabetized overview of all known natural products. The most positive attribute of this book is the concise and easy to follow format. Readers can quickly find what they are looking for, which is very important in practice. This reference also contains monographs, a thorough appendix, as well as a therapeutic uses index and primary index. It follows the same format as all publications from Wolters Kluwer Health, which adds to its ease of use.
Assessment
This is an excellent reference that is also essential. Many patients are turning to natural products in lieu of traditional medications, but so little is known about these products and their clinical implications. This reference presents fact-based information and thoroughly covers all known natural products.
