Since it specifically concentrates on the microorganisms in the oral cavity, it is an excellent resource for teaching a course on the health of the mouth and teeth. Purpose The purpose is to provide a comprehensive text on the oral microflora and the impact on human disease. Although it is intended for dental students and practitioners, this book could also be used in an undergraduate curriculum for students interested in oral microbiology. Audience It is designed to be used in a course directed at students in the dental field. It has been compiled by over 40 different authors from more than 20 different universities and institutes worldwide. This is clearly a textbook written by the experts in oral microbiology and immunology. Features The first of the book's three major sections covers the general principles of microorganisms found in the oral cavity. The 10 chapters cover such diverse subjects as general oral microbiology, the oral environment, and oral microbial physiology with detailed chapters on molecular biology and genetics of oral bacteria. The second section describes diseases of the oral cavity caused by microorganisms. This section's six chapters describe the process leading to caries and periodontal disease. This is followed by oral infections caused by nonbacterial microorganisms such as viruses and fungi. The last section of two chapters discusses the methods to control oral infections.
