Description
This fifth edition continues to fulfill its recognized role as a comprehensive reference textbook of pediatric gastroenterology.
Purpose
It is intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the most recent advances in pediatric gastroenterology and an international perspective for a rapidly evolving and increasingly technical subspecialty. The book meets these essential and important objectives in the field of pediatric gastroenterology. The authors adequately represent American and European perspectives, but not so much the other regions of the world.
Audience
The book is primarily meant for healthcare providers who deal with gastrointestinal and liver diseases in children. Nutrition topics are not covered. As a textbook with a comprehensive approach, it provides a level of in-depth analysis and knowledge that will be particularly suited for providers of specialized care. All contributors have established reputations and expertise in their areas of interest.
Features
The book covers diseases of different segments of the gastrointestinal tract liver and pancreas as well as diagnostic aspects. This is the book for anyone in search of detailed information on almost any topic in pediatric gastroenterology. All topics are treated in depth and pathophysiology presented in detail. Chapters on nausea, vomiting, gastritis, acid peptic disease, and metabolic disorders such as mitochondrial dysfunction use a systematic approach and are just some examples of the lucid, easy to comprehend writing. Some chapters mix up the clinical information with genetic and pathophysiologic discussions, so readers have to sort through it for relevant clinical information. However, this is to be expected in a comprehensive reference. Illustrations would have been more appealing in color. Nutritional issues are not addressed, as this is meant to be used in concert with a separate textbook of pediatric nutrition. Some readers may find this to be a disadvantage, as nutrition is integral to pediatric gastroenterology.
Assessment
This is an excellent comprehensive textbook of pediatric gastroenterology written by contributors who are authorities in their fields. This is a go-to textbook for anyone looking for a detail or fact on any topic in pediatric gastroenterology. This revised, updated edition, with its new leadership and editorial board, will continue to be the standard reference for pediatric gastroenterology topics, just like the previous editions.
