Description
This is the sixth edition (fifth edition in 2013) of a well-used book describing common procedures used on neonates. The book also covers physiological monitoring with a new chapter on aEEG and miscellaneous procedures such as phototherapy, hearing screening, and whole-body cooling. With the retirement of Dr. Mhairi MacDonald, Dr. Ramasethu and Dr. Seo have taken over. The accompanying website is a replication of the print book with the added feature of an audiobook.
Purpose
The purpose is to provide a supplement to the traditional teaching of procedures at the bedside ("watch one, do one, teach one") by experienced clinicians to trainees. The book has a full description of each procedure including indications, equipment, technique, complications, and references. The descriptions are complemented with excellent photographs and figures. The book certainly meets this very worthwhile objective.
Audience
The audience is all neonatal caretakers including nurses, NNPs, physician trainees, and experienced attendings. The comprehensive approach to this wide array of procedures and monitoring should have application to all aspects of neonatal care. Dr. Ramasethu has been an author of the book for at least the last three editions and many of the contributors are faculty at George Washington University or Georgetown Hospital in Washington, D.C.
Features
The book's nine sections cover virtually all procedures done on newborns. The initial two sections cover preparation and support and include chapters on informed consent and methods of restraint. Other sections cover procedures such as blood sampling, vascular access, and tube placement. Although there is a chapter on whole body cooling, head cooling is not covered. Most of the photographs are very helpful, but some are a little dark. The appendix is helpful, covering among other topics pain scales and sedative and analgesic agents.
Assessment
This is the premier reference for neonatal procedures in the field. Other general textbooks or handbooks have brief sections on procedures, but none can compare to the broad coverage and detailed reviews of this book. This should be available in every neonatal unit, and it will be valuable adjunct to the traditional bedside teaching of procedures.
